Hi-Hat Controller Sensor on Alesis Strata Prime
Setup — Hi-Hat Controller Sensor on Alesis Strata Prime
WorksYes — the Hi-Hat Controller Sensor works as a full hi-hat on the Alesis Strata Prime: variable pedal position.
Continuous
Open
Closed
Wiring: 1× TRS (pad) → HH CYM trigger input + 1× TRS (controller) → HH CTRL
Variable hi-hat is fully supported — the controller mounts under the cymbal and tracks the pedal's relative position continuously, so open, half-open, closed, chick, and splash articulations all play. The Hi-Hat slot also reads Bow, Edge, and Bell zones. Use a TRS cable for the controller: HH CTRL is one of the fourteen 1/4" TRS jacks in that row, and User Guide §2.2 item 7 scopes them as "Trigger Inputs (1/4" TRS [6.35 mm]) … Connect cables here to receive signals from drum and cymbal triggers, and a hi-hat pedal" (p.12).
Cable routing
- Connect a 1/4" TRS cable from the hi-hat pad to the HH CYM trigger input on the rear panel — that is Alesis's label for the hi-hat cymbal jack, and it sits next to HH CTRL (User Guide p.7).
- Mount the hi-hat controller under the cymbal on the hi-hat stand so it tracks the pedal travel.
- Connect a 1/4" TRS cable from the hi-hat controller to the HH CTRL jack on the rear panel.
Module settings
- Open Trigger mode and tap HH Setup; loosen the clutch, let the cymbal rest down on the controller, tap SET, then — without pushing down on the pedal — raise the cymbal to playing height, tighten the clutch, and press FINISH.
- In Advanced (HH), fine-tune Pedal Bottom (100-2048) for where open sounds transition to closed and where chick/splash start.
- In Advanced (HH), adjust Chick Gain (0-200), Splash Sensitivity, and Splash Gain (0-200) for the foot-technique response you prefer.
- Re-run HH Setup if you change the cymbal height.
Tips
- Pedal Bottom is the key playability control — higher makes chick/splash more sensitive, lower makes open/closed patterns more realistic.
- Pedal Top generally needs no change after calibration; it sets where the fully open sound plays.
- Re-run HH Setup if you change the cymbal height so the variable response tracks the full pedal travel.
- Do not set the cymbal too high above the controller piston, or position tracking suffers.
