Works

Yes — the Hi-Hat Controller Sensor works as a full hi-hat on the Roland TD-20: variable pedal position.

Continuous Open Closed

Wiring: 1× TRS → HI-HAT input on the rear panel + 1× TRS (controller) → HH CTRL input on the rear panel

Continuous hi-hat control. Set the Hi-Hat Ctrl Type to FD for the variable-resistance Lemon controller — the TD-20 then reads full open-to-closed pedal movement.

Cable routing

  1. Connect a ¼″ TRS cable from the hi-hat pad to the HI-HAT input on the rear panel.
  2. Connect a ¼″ TRS cable from the hi-hat controller to the HH CTRL input on the rear panel.

Module settings

  1. Press [TRIGGER], then [F3 (HI-HAT)] to open the TRIGGER HIHAT screen.
  2. Use [CURSOR (up/down)] to select "Hi-Hat Ctrl Type" and [+/-] or [VALUE] to set it to "FD" — the correct mode for a variable-resistance hi-hat controller.
  3. Set "CC Max" (90 or 127) and "CC Resolution" (HIGH for the smoothest pedal control) with [+/-] or [VALUE].
  4. On the "TRIGGER BANK" screen ([TRIGGER] then [F1 (BANK)]), strike the hi-hat and set its trigger type to PAD1 — the TD-20's list has no VH-11 value, and its VH12 setting is for Roland's matched VH-12, not for a VH-11-style controller.
  5. Press [F2 (BASIC)], strike the hi-hat to select it, then set "Sensitivity" (1-32) and "Threshold" (0-31).

Tips

  1. Set CC Resolution to HIGH for the smoothest continuous pedal response.
  2. Continuous pedal control provides smooth open-to-closed transitions.
