14" 2-Piece Electronic Hi-Hat Cymbals on Roland TD-8

Wiring, module settings, and tips for the 14" 2-Piece Electronic Hi-Hat Cymbals when used with the Roland TD-8.

Setup — 14" 2-Piece Electronic Hi-Hat Cymbals on Roland TD-8

Works

Yes — the 14" 2-Piece Electronic Hi-Hat Cymbals works as a full hi-hat on the Roland TD-8: variable pedal position.

Continuous Open Closed

Wiring: 1× TRS → HI-HAT input on the rear panel + 1× TRS (controller) → HH CTRL input on the rear panel

Continuous hi-hat control. Supports the FD-7 hi-hat control pedal.

Cable routing

  1. Connect a ¼″ TRS cable from the hi-hat pad to the HI-HAT input on the rear panel.
  2. Connect a ¼″ TRS cable from the hi-hat controller to the HH CTRL input on the rear panel.

Module settings

  1. Press [SETUP], then [F1 (TRIG)] — the "TRIGGER BANK" screen appears.
  2. Press CURSOR to move to the trigger type, then strike the hi-hat pad — the cursor moves to that pad's setting.
  3. Set the trigger type to PD7 (or PD9) — the TD-8's trigger-type list has no hi-hat values. Pedal position is read from the HH CTRL jack, which takes no type setting of its own.

Tips

  1. Continuous pedal control provides smooth open-to-closed transitions.
  2. After turning on the power, do not step on the pedals or strike the pads until the drum kit name appears — depressing the hi-hat control pedal during power-up prevents proper open/close control.
14" 2-Piece Electronic Hi-Hat Cymbals also fits 70 other drum modules — see setup
