T550 10" Low Tom on Roland SPD-SX

Wiring, module settings, and tips for the T550 10" Low Tom when used with the Roland SPD-SX.

Setup — T550 10" Low Tom on Roland SPD-SX

Works

Yes — the T550 10" Low Tom works as a full tom on the Roland SPD-SX: head + rim.

Head Rim

Wiring: 1× TRS per tom → a TRIG IN jack (1/2 or 3/4) set to INPUT MODE HEAD&RIM — head + rim

Each 2-zone tom uses one of the two TRIG IN jacks in HEAD&RIM mode (head + rim over a single TRS cable). With only two jacks you can connect at most two 2-zone pads directly. A jack can instead run in TRIGx2 mode, where a Y-cable (stereo 1/4" plug to two 1/4" plugs) splits it into its two numbered triggers as separate single-zone inputs — Roland notes that "if you connect two external pads to one TRIG IN jack, only head shots will be available" (p.27).

Cable routing

  1. Connect a 1/4" TRS cable from each Lemon tom pad to a free TRIG IN jack (1/2 or 3/4).

Module settings

  1. Press [MENU] > SETUP > TRIG IN.
  2. For each tom's trigger input, set INPUT MODE to HEAD&RIM.
  3. Set TRIG TYPE to a tom profile such as PD-85 or PD-105, then adjust PAD SENS, THRESHOLD and the trigger curve.
  4. Assign tom head and rim waves to each trigger input in the KIT PAD screen.

Tips

  1. Only two physical jacks exist — each 2-zone tom needs its own jack in HEAD&RIM mode.
  2. Raise XTALK CANCEL between toms mounted on the same stand.
T550 10" Low Tom also fits 74 other drum modules — see setup
