18" Triple-Zone Crash/Ride on Roland TD-27

Wiring, module settings, and tips for the 18" Triple-Zone Crash/Ride when used with the Roland TD-27.

Setup — 18" Triple-Zone Crash/Ride on Roland TD-27

Works

Yes — the 18" Triple-Zone Crash/Ride works as a full 2-zone crash on the Roland TD-27: bow + edge.

Bow Edge

Wiring: CRASH1 connector on the DB-25 cable snake → cymbal, or 1× TRS → one of the TRIGGER IN (CRASH 2, AUX 1–AUX 3) jacks on the rear panel

Dual-zone crash triggering: bow (tip) and edge (ring) respond independently over the one lead. Choke works by grabbing the cymbal edge. The TD-27 supports Roland CY-series 2-zone cymbals.

Cable routing

  1. Plug the CRASH1 connector on the DB-25 cable snake into the cymbal.
  2. For additional cymbals, connect a ¼″ TRS cable to one of the rear-panel TRIGGER IN jacks — 1/4-inch TRS, four of them (CRASH 2, AUX 1–AUX 3). The manual's own guidance is to “Connect a crash cymbal to CRASH 2. Use AUX 1–AUX 3 to add more types of pads.” (p. 10, p. 4)

  1. Press [SYSTEM], select "TRIGGER" and press [ENTER], then select "BANK" and press [ENTER] to open the TRIGGER BANK screen.
  2. Strike the cymbal (display shows "C1"/"C2") or use the cursor buttons to select the CRASH 1 or CRASH 2 input.
  3. Use the dial to set the Trig Type to the model that matches your cymbal.
  4. Back on the TRIGGER MENU, open "PARAM", select the cymbal, then set Sensitivity from the cursor + dial.

Tips

  1. Bow and edge zones respond independently.
  2. Choke works by grabbing the cymbal edge.
  3. The 3 DIGITAL TRIGGER IN (USB) jacks are for Roland digital pads only.
18" Triple-Zone Crash/Ride also fits 76 other drum modules — see setup
