Setup details by role
Snare pad 2-zone SNR connector on the DB-25 trigger cable → snare pad
Dual-zone snare triggering: head (tip) and rim (ring) are read over the one lead and play separate sounds.
Tom pad 1-zone T1, T2, T3 connectors on the DB-25 trigger cable → one per tom pad
The Roland TD-4 tom inputs are single-zone — only the head signal is read. Rim hits on a dual-zone tom pad will not produce a separate sound.
Kick pad Works KIK connector on the DB-25 trigger cable → kick pad
Single-zone kick trigger via the cable snake. Only the head zone is active.
2-zone crash 2-zone CR1 connector on the DB-25 trigger cable → cymbal (CR2 also available for a second 2-zone crash, unless used as RIDE BELL)
Dual-zone crash triggering: bow (tip) and edge (ring) respond independently over the one lead. Choke works by grabbing the cymbal edge. The TD-4 has two 2-zone crash inputs (CR1 and CR2). If you are running a 3-zone ride, the CR2 lead is repurposed as RIDE BELL and only CR1 remains available for a crash.
3-zone ride 3-zone RD connector on the DB-25 trigger cable → Ride 1 + CR2 connector → Ride 2, with Crash 2 Usage set to RIDE BELL
Full 3-zone ride is supported on the TD-4 by repurposing the CR2 trigger lead as RIDE BELL. The cymbal's Ride 1 output carries bow + edge to the RD input; the Ride 2 output carries bell to the CR2 input. This trades away the second crash slot in exchange for true 3-zone ride playing.
Hi-hat Continuous HH connector → hi-hat pad + HHC connector → hi-hat controller, both on the DB-25 trigger cable
Continuous hi-hat control. The TD-4 transmits the actual pedal position over MIDI and supports the FD-8 footswitch as well as the VH-11 V-Hi-Hat.
